With Its Natural Gas Production Doubling in Nine Years, China Becomes World??s Sixth Largest Natural Gas Producer
On April 27, the Ministry of Science and Technology held a press conference, announcing that China??s annual natural gas output almost doubled, increasing from 67.7 billion cubic meters in 2007 to 137.1 billion cubic meters in 2016. China??s global ranking also rose from the ninth to the sixth place.

The large-scale oil and gas field and coal bed methane exploitation project was put into operation in 2008. Since then, China??s natural gas industry has advanced by leaps and bounds. The total proven reserves also doubled, increasing from 6.1 trillion cubic meters at the end of 2007 to 12.98 trillion cubic meters, ninth in the world.

According to Li Fanrong, deputy head of China??s National Energy Administration, China has upgraded its technologies and thus found a number of large oil and gas fields, which supports the constant growth of gas and oil reserves. After six natural gas fields with billions cubic meters of reserves were found at the deep layer of Kuche County, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, China now has a huge natural gas zone with trillions cubic meters of reserves. The gas field found in Sichuan??s Anyue is the oldest giant gas field of China. With a third-level reserve of 1.5 trillion cubic meters, it is regarded as a great discovery in the history of China??s natural gas development.

Li said China??s proven reserve of petroleum has exceeded 1 billion tons for nine consecutive years, and gas reserve has been more than 500 billion cubic meters for five consecutive years. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, China will focus on three major fields, deep-seated beds of land, deep sea and unconventional oil & gas and develop important theories, technologies and equipment that can guide the technological development of China??s oil industry and gain remarkable international reputation, striving to fully meet overall strategic goals for oil and gas development in 2020.

Chen Chuanhong, head of the ministry's National Science and Technology Major Project Office, said that the proportion of natural gas in China??s primary energy consumption has increased from 3% to 6%, and will rise to 8.3%-10% at the end of the 13th five-year plan period. This will make great contributions to China??s energy structure optimization and environment improvement.
