China Became the World's Largest Direct Consumer of Geothermal Power

It is learned on the "240th China Engineering Science and Technology Forum • China Geothermal International Forum 2016" that with a relatively developed technological system for the development and use of geothermal energy resources, China has become the world's largest direct consumer of geothermal power. By 2020, the percentage of non-fossil fuels in total primary energy consumption is expected to increase from 12% to 15%, in which geothermal power plays the leading role. By then, geothermal power will cover the heating and cooling area of 1.6 billion square meters in China with an aggregated installed capacity of 530MWh, replacing 72.1 million tons of standard coal and reducing 177 million tons of CO2 emission. This is of great significance to optimizing energy mix, promoting energy conservation and emission reduction and improving environment in China.

Geothermal power is a kind of clean and renewable energy. China has a large geothermal power resource reserve, accounting for 1/6 of the world's total. By the end of the 12th Five Year Plan Period, shallow geothermal heating and cooling area covered 392 million square meters, middle and deep geothermal heating and cooling area covered 102 million square meters. Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province will become major producers of geothermal power during the 13th Five Year Plan Period. According to statistics, by the end of 2015, the Beijing ?C Tianjin ?C Hebei area had realized a geothermal heating and cooling coverage of 130 million square meters, replacing 3.8 million tons of standard coal and reducing 9.8 million tons of CO2 emissions on an annual basis.
